Controlling Insects and Pests Naturally

Various commercial insecticides and pesticides exist to help rid our gardens of unwanted guest. There are a few natural techniques which can be used to relieve your garden of insects and pests . These three techniques discussed below are very simple and inexpensive to create.

If you are noticing a particular bug that is persistent in your garden you may want to try using “bug juice spray”. This spray is extremely easy to create. The gardener needs to collect a half of cup of the insect that is infecting his/her garden and mix with 2 cups of warm water. Using a blender that is only used for the yard, blend the mixture until liquefied. Strain the mixture using a cheesecloth and put the strained liquid in a spray bottle. Spray plants in your garden completely, both on the top and bottoms of the leaves. The concept behind the "bug juice spray", is that by grinding the bugs that are infesting the garden they will release a scent to warn other bugs to stay away.

Garlic spray can also be used as a natural technique to ward away pests and insects. Simply grind up a half of cup of garlic and mix with a pint of water. As with the "bug juice spray" use a non cooking blender until thoroughly liquefied and strain using a cheesecloth. Spray the garden plants well on both the top and underside of the leaves. You can substitute onion or chives in place of the garlic. Some gardeners also recommend using hot peppers to create a natural spray.

The third technique that can be used to prevent pests in your garden naturally is by setting up natural barriers . Gardeners can use sawdust mulch to help prevent flies from infesting the garden. Simply place a few inches of the sawdust mulch around the plants once the plants start to grow. The Sawdust mulch will also help prevent any existing eggs from hatching.

To help control pests that are sensitive to pH levels gardeners can use wood ashes in the soil around the plants. Don’t put wood ashes directly on the actual plants. Wood ashes are recommended for vegetables such as cabbage, cucumbers, and several types of beans. One other type of barrier you can consider using for plants such as cabbage would be some type of covering that allows enough sunlight, air, and water to nourish you plants.

The gardener can use agricultural fleece to wrap around the vegetable to accomplish this. The gardener can also use nylon such as part of pair of pantyhose to cover the heads of his/her vegetables. The nylon will stretch as your garden grows, while allowing the plants to still receive adequate sun and water to grow.
